5 Reasons to Do a Mississippi River Cruise

When you think of cruising, you probably think of large ships with bowling alleys, pools, and sandy beach destinations. But the best cruise you will ever take is probably on a boat that’s a little more intimate. River cruising down the Mississippi on a steamboat can be the best vacation you ever had; and here are 5 reasons why.

See America – The Mississippi is massive and covers some of the most historic cities in the United States. These cities include St. Louis, Minneapolis, Memphis, and New Orleans, just to name a few. As you cruise down the Mississippi, you are journeying through the history of the United States, and have the opportunity to see the inspiration of the art and literature which defined this country. Cruising the Mississippi will give you a new appreciation for America.

Calm Waters – Unlike cruising on the ocean, cruising down the river is very peaceful and calm. If you are prone to motion sickness, river cruising may be a real blessing.

Ease of Excursions – Because you are cruising within the United States, you have no need for a passport and no need for customs when entering and exiting the boat. This makes going on excursions easier than on an international cruise.

Varying Lengths – The Mississippi is long. Starting at Lake Itasca in Minnesota and running all the way down to New Orleans, LA, there is a lot of river to cover. The cruises are generally broken up into three sections: the Lower Mississippi, Middle Mississippi, and Upper Mississippi. Each stretch will generally run for 7 days, meaning you can create a one, two, or three-week vacation. There are also some lines that do shorter lengths if needed.

Theme Options Available – If the idea of cruising the Mississippi still doesn’t appeal to you, one of the themed cruise options might push you over the edge. Themes can include music, like jazz or blues, the cuisines of the ports of call, following the life of Mark Twain, or exploring the Civil War. These themes will usually include excursion options to really delve into the theme choice.

River cruising can be a vacation to remember, and with all of the conveniences of staying in America, a Mississippi river cruise is a great way to try it out.
